Software Packages in Animal Breeding
نویسنده
چکیده
Six packages for solving mixed model equations and estimating variance components by REML are compared. Each has a unique strength. Meticulously finished DFREML is the only one that implements hypothesis testing for variance component estimates. MTDFREML is a comprehensive, relatively easy to install and simple to use package for analyses of experimental data. PEST, the only semi-commercial program compared, has the best user interface and is the best supported program. The JAA/MTC package is the simplest and can compute multitrait estimates of variance components for many traits in the repeatability model. ABTK introduces tools that with built-in Unix utilities offer great flexibility to experienced users. Finally, DMU is a comprehensive attempt for a very general package, efficient for both small and large data sets, and with unique support for a Newton-Raphson type REML.

Complex Models, More Data: Simpler Programming?
The complexity of models used for or considered for use in genetic evaluation is increasing. Examples of new models are test-day models in dairy cattle, growth models in beef cattle, and models with dominance or/and QTL effects. These models are usually linear but analyses of some traits may require nonlinear models, which are usually more complicated to write and test. More complicated models ...

As its name implies, survival analysis is typically Survival or failure time traits such as herd life and days open are both important economically and pose a number of challenges to an analysis based on linear mixed models. The main features of a survival trait are that it is the time until some event occurs, and some of the observations are censored. Survival models and the associated estimat...
متن کاملPlace prioritization for biodiversity reserve network design: a comparison of the SITES and ResNet software packages for coverage and efficiency
The place prioritization problem in conservation biology is that of establishing a sequentially prioritized list of places on the basis of biodiversity content. Such a list can then be used to select reserve networks that are designed to be fully representative of the biodiversity of an area as efficiently as possible (for instance, with minimum area or cost). The usual goal is the representati...
متن کاملAn Investigation on Population Structure and Inbreeding of Sangsari Sheep
The aim of this study was to describe inbreeding and population structure in Sangsari sheep breeding station. For this reason, data from 7028 Sangsari sheep which were collected during 1987-2014 in Sangsari sheep breeding station located near to Damghan city, Semnan province were used. Lambs born during 2010-2014 were considered as reference population. The genetic structure analysis of the pop...
متن کاملMyostatin Gene Polymorphism and Its Association with Production Traits in Western Azerbaijan Native Chickens
In the present study, the polymorphism of myostatin gene (MSTN) in native chickens of Western Azerbaijan Rearing and Breeding Institute was investigated. The blood samples were collected from eighty two randomly selected hens. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples and a fragment of myostatin including 599 bp in promoter and exon 1 was amplified using PCR method. Breeding values for body ...
